5A – Identifying Local Opportunities

1) "After Dorian, Bahamas tackles massive clean-up"

https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190912/after-dorian-bahamas-tackles-massive-clean-up

This article is describing the long and tenuous struggle the Bahamas will have after the heavy impact Hurricane Dorian had on it. The article states that Hurricane Dorian has caused the Bahamas over $7 Billion worth of damages. As a result, the Bahamas is accepting any help it can get to help with their problem. Also included in the article is personal recollections of the Hurricane from citizens of the Bahamas. The ones I found most meaningful was a pastor who had his church destroyed from the Hurricane and a fisherman who has no source of income because all of his fish were killed. The problem in this story is that the citizens of the Bahamas have a huge problem on their hands of needing to repair $7 billion worth of damages but no source of income to help them with. Their sources of income were destroyed with the hurricane. The citizens of the Bahamas have this problem because it directly effects them from a physical, emotional, and mental standpoint.

2) "GameStop in ‘tough place,’ set to close up to 200 stores"

https://fox5sandiego.com/2019/09/12/gamestop-in-tough-place-set-to-close-up-to-200-stores/

This article is describing the fact that Gamestop needs to close an excess of up to 200 stores because of their recent decline in sales. The article states that "GameStop's total global sales dropped 14.3% to $1.3 billion in the second quarter". The article also states that the net loss was $415.3 million. Because of this huge loss, Gamestop is finding themselves needing to close up to 200 stores. The problem is that Gamestop has faced such a heavy decline in sales and thus needs to close down all these stores. Not only do i believe Gamestop as a company has this problem, but I also feel the general public has this problem. Those that enjoy video games especially.

3) "You can still get a Popeyes chicken sandwich — if you bring your own bun"

https://www.gainesville.com/zz/entertainmentlife/20190912/you-can-still-get-popeyes-chicken-sandwich---if-you-bring-your-own-bun

This article is describing how the phenomenon surrounding Popeye's chicken sandwich and what they are doing to deal with the problem. Rather than stop selling the sandwich entirely, Popeye's came up with the solution to have their customers bring in their own buns if they wanted the sandwich. This is one of many solutions that Popeye's has come up with to help solve their problem of selling out of chicken sandwiches. Not only do I believe that Popeye's has this problem because of their lack of resources during this recent epidemic of the Popeye's chicken sandwich craze, but also Popeye's potential customers who want to try this sandwich.

4) "UF Preview costs exceeded state limit"

https://www.gainesville.com/news/20190907/uf-preview-costs-exceeded-state-limit

This article states how UF's preview exceeds the state limit in freshman orientations. The state limit is $35. However, UF's preview costs freshman hundreds of dollars. The average amount of money it costs a UF freshman to attend preview is $200. Thus, the problem is that UF's preview is far too expensive for typical college orientations. Not only is UF the main victim of the problem because they are being put in negative spotlight, but UF freshman also have this problem because of how much they have to pay to attend preview.

5) "Breaking News: U. S. Highway 8 in Barron is closed due to crash"

This article states the fact that the U.S. Highway 8 in Barron closed down due to a crash. The crash happened the morning of September 12th at 5:45 AM and the closure will be for at least 2 hours. The problem is that a crash is causing this major freeway to close down for 2 hours at peak times when people need to get to work. As stated previously, the people who have this problem are people that use this freeway to get around in the morning for work or somewhere else.

  1. Jordan,
You have a wide arrange of articles that show some of the many problems around us. The problem of Hurricane Dorian is definitely one that has been heavily publicized and the many needs that the people in the Bahamas have are still left unmet. I also like how you detail Gamestop's problems with selling products and why they are having to close stores so often. Overall it is a good post showing the many problems in our communities all around us.

  2. Dear Jordan,
Your articles definitely tackle a lot of categories. You really do seperate each paragraph with each problem/summary. I think the Dorian one is great on because its been talked about around the world and I have family over there so being able to see more coverage on the issue is a great thing. You also talk about local problems which is a great thing to know. Great posts!
