21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, Guy Kawasaki

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general argument of the book was stating the ever-increasing impact that social media has on companies in today's environment. To gain outside followers from younger generations, companies are more dependent than ever on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more to gain a bigger market share.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I think this book is extremely relevant to what we're learning in ENT 3003. Companies are more reliant on social media than we've ever seen before. Because of this, entrepreneurs have to follow this pattern and also capitalize on the power that social media provides them with. Especially since most entrepreneurs business ideas revolve around technology, it's extremely important to capitalize on social media through these ideas in order to gain a bigger market share of younger generation customers.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
The exercise would revolve around creating a social media profile on one of the 3 main platforms, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and seeing the type of influence that you can create that can benefit any given company. The activity would span a month long and it would be to create a positive outlook on your company based off social media mentions. You'd be able to track these mentions through hashtags. The tips that were stated in this book would be used to help achieve maximum benefit towards the page.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
The biggest surprise was how the author explains why certain criteria of social media are so important. For example, the author has a section on "how to perfect your posts" and one of the pieces of advice is to be as visual as possible. While this didn't surprise me, the details that he used to back up this statement really impacted me greatly on how potentially great this would be. The best way to captivate the human mind is through visual effects, and this book does a great job explaining the effect this has on social media platforms.

  2. Dear Jordan, The theme of this book seems to be really relevant to the way companies actually operate in this day and age. Social Media is becoming increasingly important, and I'm sure there is a lot to learn as far as marketing. I also agree with your point that these marketing tools apply to our class because an Entrepreneur should be aware of every advantage he or she can get to push the brand of their company.
