25A - What's Next?

Existing Market.
Step 1: After college, I plan to take a gap year before venturing into law school. During this gap year, I want to study computer design and application design. During this process, I will decide whether or not I should pursue this venture further.
Step 2: I've interviewed 3 potential customers who I feel have a general understanding of my venture and who it could potentially apply to. They all had a response that was relatively under the lines of "if you want to take this seriously, you need to delve deep and have a firm understanding of application design". They understand the potential that this venture has, and they don't want it to go to waste through a lack of understanding of application design.
Step 3: As I've said previously, my future lies in a gap year after I graduate college and then hopefully I can go to law school. During this gap year, I plan to study computer design and application design. Hopefully from this, I will be able to understand the full potential that my venture can have and choose to pursue it further. If not, I hope to give this business idea off to someone that can make this a reality. I'd like a percentage of ownership because I came up with the idea, but I'd also love for this to become a reality so it can benefit the thousands of people that I hope it can.
New Market.
Step 1: My new market can be an in-person class. Rather than this being an application that you can have access to at all times, this would be something you'd only have access to if you show up in person.
Step 2: I feel like this could potentially be beneficial to people who like to learn things hands on. I also feel like having the leisure of choosing your own schedule could be detrimental to some people, as they'll have a tendency to procrastinate. Having an in-person option would thus be beneficial to these type of people.
Step 3: I interviewed two people from this market. They loved the idea of having a hands-on approach to learning more about their technology products. They thought that having an application where they could choose their own schedule would cause them to be lackadaisical with their approach. They think that having textbooks and in-person tutors would also be beneficial to this type of market, and I think this is something that I'd like to pursue if I get into this further.
Step 4:  What surprised me the most was how many people prefer a hands-on, set-schedule approach compared to my venture's style. I think one of the main advantages my venture has is that it capitalizes on customer's comfortability and allows them to go about their program at their own leisure. But now that I've learned that this only captures a small amount of the market share of the potential employees, I have to consider other options. This hands-on approach is a great option to fall back on if the online program sees itself to fail.

I liked this assignment. I feel like it's great to go outside your comfort zone and write about something different than we've been writing on for the duration of this course. Thinking outside the box is a very valuable skill for entrepreneurs to have, and I feel like this assignment tries to teach you that.

  1. Hello Jordan,
I, too, also received a similar response from my original audience when trying to make a new venture. It most likely seems that their needs is centered around learning the basics of technology. I also think that the window for this opportunity is short-lived, so it is unfortunate that we may not be able to expand our services to our original targeted market. After reading your reflection, I felt the same experience after failing from reaching a new audience. However, it does give the satisfaction of finding an answer than to never do.

  2. Jordan,
This is a great report on the possibilities you could explore within your venture. I thought that your new market idea was particularly interesting and the feedback you received from that seemed to be very positive as well. I agree that it would be hard to capture much of a market share with this approach, but it could be a good back up to consider if the online market were to prove unsuccessful.

  3. Hey Jordan!
I felt the same way about this assignment. It really forced me to take a step back and figure out the different routes I could go down with my original idea. This assignment reminded me of the bug list assignment, as they both truly pushed me to think outside of the box and develop new perspectives. Great job!

  4. Dear Jordan,
I too think it is great that we all had to delve outside of our comfort zones and ask people what they think we could do or change to the company. I think your idea for a new market is great and could definetly help build your brand, but you must adjust to the people who think it is easier to learn hands on rather then using the app. Great post!
